It’s official. The next Sweets and Tweets is July 9, 2009. Sweets and Tweets (formerly Blogging and Cupcakes) is a series of sweet talks about the use of social media by established companies, startups, non-profits, trade associations and government agencies — all the players in D.C.’s diverse technology community. Genius Rocket is our sponsor and Mark Walsh, entrepreneur, venture capitalist and politico, will be our speaker. He’ll talk about crowdsourcing everything from healthcare to lawncare and how and why this is becoming a new way of doing business.

The first event in our series of delicious conversations was held at the ultra cool Baked & Wired in Georgetown. HHS social media guy Andrew Wilson talked about Government 2.0 and how HHS is using social media for crisis communications, community building and crowdsourcing.

Rapid Response: Using Social Media in a Crisis

Wilson talked about the HHS/FDA/CDC Social Media page which was set up — in only four days — to educate consumers and enable them to spread the word about the Peanut Butter Product recall related to salmonella. He also told us about crowdsourcing the new HHS Center for New Media.

Andrew Wilson, HHS’s Web Content Manager, has been involved in the creation and coordination of the agency’s social media strategy and is helping create the new HHS Center for Social (or New) Media.

He invites you to follow him on Twitter.

Previously the Managing Web Editor for the USDA’s CSREES, Andrew is responsible for day-to-day management of PandemicFlu.gov.

A Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal in the mid-1990’s, he has a master’s degree in entomology.
